The main purpose of the VTCT Level 1 Certificate in Hair and Beauty Skills (VRQ) is to prepare you to progress to the next level of vocational learning. All the units in this qualification directly prepare you for further study in the hair and beauty sector.

This qualification includes all the required elements to develop your practical hair and beauty skills including a mandatory unit in Create a hair and beauty image using colour. You will also have the opportunity to develop your skills and abilities further by completing units which may include: Make-up application, Skincare, Nail art, Face painting, Blow-drying hair, Winding skills, Shampooing and conditioning hair, Plaiting hair, Colouring hair using temporary colour.

You will also have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant hair and beauty products, health and safety, customer services, designing retail display areas and the hair and beauty sector.

1. Practical Hair and Beauty Techniques

  • Creating Hair and Beauty Images Using Colour: Mastering the application of color to create cohesive hair and beauty looks.
  • Hair Styling Skills: Techniques like blow-drying, shampooing, conditioning, plaiting, and winding hair.
  • Basic Hair Coloring: Using temporary color to enhance hair styling.
  • Nail and Foot Care: Providing hand, nail, and foot care services.
  • Makeup and Skincare Application: Basic makeup techniques, skincare routines, and nail art.

2. Industry Knowledge and Understanding

  • Understanding the Hair and Beauty Sector: Gaining foundational knowledge of the industry, its practices, and career opportunities.
  • Health and Safety in the Salon: Learning essential health and safety practices to maintain a safe working environment.

3. Customer Service and Retail Skills

  • Customer Service Skills: Developing effective communication and customer service techniques to enhance client experiences.
  • Promoting Hair and Beauty Products: Techniques for selling and promoting salon products.
  • Retail Display Design: Skills in designing and maintaining attractive retail displays.

These skills provide a solid foundation for further study or entry-level work in the hair and beauty industry.
